Them Crooked Vultures - Surprise Set

A wild crowd at the NME/Radio 1 stage witnessed the appearance of a hard rock supergroup as ‘Them Crooked Vultures’ performed a surprise set.

The group, comprising Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones and Alain Johannes sent the masses into hysteria as they delivered a mesmeric rock masterclass.

Blowing kisses from behind the drum kit, Grohl and the band delivered a seven song set including opener 'Elephant'.

Look out for them at Reading!

Oxfam DIY and Mrs. Jones all set to glamourise Leeds Festival

Oxfam DIY with Mrs Jones is heading to Leeds Festival with a shop full of goodies, a bag full of  tricks and a photo booth to capture the fun.

Following the success of  Oxfam DIY at this years Glastonbury festival, Oxfam is taking its unique festival fashion experience on the road. The Oxfam shop has become beloved of  those who like to add a little something extra to their festival get up and  the DIY store now offers a fully interactive festival  makeover.

Transforming festival goers into the music icon of their  choice, the ‘Be The Band’ dress up area is inviting fans to rummage in the new  dress up props box and get kitted out for a classic photo that is a keepsake  forever. Revellers not only get a photo souvenir but they can upload it  immediately to their Facebook profile straight from the Oxfam tent, so their  friends can see what they’re missing out on.

Oxfam has also invited Mrs Jones to join in the fun with her celebrated DIY skills and expert team, as well as fully trained Oxfam volunteers, to help festival goers get creative with their outfits. Studs, pins, sequins, feathers, scissors and spray  paint will all be at hand to turn moshers into models and jeans into  jumpsuits.  In keeping with the theme of the weekend those entering the  DIY world can expect to get the full rock star treatment at Leeds.

Sarah Farquhar, Head of Retail at Oxfam, said:
“For years  the Oxfam festival shop has provided an essential service to shoppers looking  for festival fashion. We're very excited to be bringing DIY and Mrs Jones to Leeds, helping people create their own special look and adding  some adventure to their festival experience while they shop. Oxfam DIY highlights the ways in which we can all look again at our wardrobe, experiment  with fashion and create affordable looks that complement our own personalities. Best of all, by shopping at Oxfam you can do all this while  helping us to fight poverty around the world.”

The Oxfam shop that  festival goers have come to rely on will be selling all the usual vintage must  haves, welly boots for the rain (hmmm…), wedding dresses, Levis jeans, leather  jackets and sequins galore… the list goes on, but for those struggling to find  their favourite festival look now, help is at hand.  The Oxfam online  shop www.oxfam.org.uk/shop has a host of garments that you can buy to create  your ultimate festival look.  You can also find Mrs Jones’ top tips on  how to transform your garments in a series of ‘How To’ lessons that can be  found online at the Oxfam DIY page  www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/content/diy/how-to/howto_home.html .  While you’re  there, check out Mrs Jones’s exclusive DIY collection, which features some key  festival pieces that can be re-created if you have the inspiration to Do It  Yourself.

After hours at Leeds, DJs and bands will be playing at The Oxfam Shop, with tunes taking you in to the early morning. Check out Mrs Jones, formally known as The High Priestess of Funk, on the decks!

Director Drew Cox is coming back again to capture all the antics  too, so jump in front of the camera and find yourself online in our Facebook  photo gallery.

If Glastonbury is anything to go by, Oxfam DIY will be  attracting some interest from the celebs and bands performing too, so if you  love a celeb appearance – keep those eyes hot on the tent and you might even  spot your favourite artist donning a catsuit in the name of  charity.

Beware of touts

We have had reports that the fake websites readingfestival2009.com and leedsfestival2009.com (and .net) are emailing customers to ask for personal details such as photocopies of credit cards, passports and utility bills.

NEW TRAFFIC PLAN FOR FESTIVAL GOERS

The aim of the new plan is to minimize disruption to local residents and on the road network. The police, Leeds City Council and the Highways Agency will be monitoring the festival route and working together to help avoid any congestion.

The routes to the festival will be well signed, are displayed on the Festival Republic website and these details have been sent out with each festival ticket.

This year, none of the old festival routes are being used. All traffic will now be directed on to the A1(M), exit at Junction 45 (Boston Spa) and use the local access roads West Woods Road and Paradise Way to travel to the festival site.

An additional route will be available on Thursday 27 August, this is the busiest period for festival traffic. Festival traffic will use the A1(M) to Junction 44 (A64 junction) and then travel westbound towards Leeds using both lanes on a one-way system and turn right into the festival car parks, opposite the Dogs Trust.

To manage this additional route the A64 is being closed to all through traffic travelling eastbound from the Fox and Grapes on Thursday 27 August from 00:01 on Thursday 27 August until 05:00 on Friday 28 August.

Through traffic travelling from York to Leeds on the A64 will continue as normal but drivers should be aware that queues are possible with festival traffic between the A1 (M) (J44) roundabout and the Fox and Grapes.  Non-festival traffic may wish to consider alternative routes, or allow more time for their journey.

Bus routes on  the A64 eastbound from Seacroft towards the A1 (M) roundabout will be diverted on Thursday 27th August.  For up to date information, please contact Metro www.wymetro.com or telephone 0113 245 7676.

The roads and junctions that are likely to be much busier than normal, as a result of festival traffic from Wednesday 26 August to the afternoon of Friday 28 August are:

• A1 (M) northbound and southbound at Junction 45 (Boston Spa)
• Grange Moor roundabout
• Wattle Syke roundabout
• West Woods Road
• Tenter Hill
• Paradise Way

In addition to the above, on Thursday 27 August traffic on the following roads will also be busier than normal:

• A1 (M) at Junction 44 (A64)
• Bramham Interchange roundabout
• A64 westbound

On Monday 31 August, as festival attendees leave the site, all of the above routes will again be busier than normal but queuing should not be as significant.

Drivers are strongly advised to use alternative routes wherever possible and avoid the above areas or, if unavoidable, to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.

OTHER TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

The following temporary traffic orders are in place as part of the overall traffic plan:

Kiddal Lane and Potterton Lane
Kiddal Lane will be closed at the junction with the A64 / York Road, and Potterton Lane will be closed at the junction with Kiddal Lane from 8am Wednesday 26th August to 3.30pm Monday 31st August

Access will of course be maintained for local residents.

Aberford Road / junction with A64
Aberford Road and the A64 junction will be closed for Thursday 27 August only during the period of the A64 eastbound closure.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
On Thursday 27 August those drivers who normally use the A64 eastbound are advised to use the following alternative routes to avoid the majority of festival traffic:

• Ring Road to M1 Junction 46, north to the A1(M) and then take A64 towards York
• Ring Road to A58, to Jct 46 of the A1 (M), south on the A1(M) and then take A64 towards York
• East Leeds Link (A63) to M1, north to the A1(M) and then take A64 towards York
• M621 to M1, north to the A1(M) and then take A64 towards York

Brighton’s Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter, better known as Blood Red Shoes will be headlining the DTTR stage this year, their only English festival appearance in 2009. Signed to V2 the band released their debut ‘Box of Secrets’ last year including the singles ‘I Wish I Was Someone Better’ and ‘It’s Getting Boring By The Sea.’ The band are currently holed up in Liverpool recording their second album with producer Mike Crossey.   Expect a great show and a perfect start to your Leeds Festival weekend.

Wild Beasts
Fresh from the release of their universally acclaimed second album ‘Two Dancers’  Kendal natives & Leeds based Wild Beasts return to Leeds Festival to play their first of 2 shows over the weekend. Their live set has been honed down to near perfection, including the singles Hootin’ & Howling, The Devils Crayon & Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants.

Bear Hands
From the same stomping ground as MGMT, Amazing Baby & Boy Crisis comes Bear Hands. Having toured the UK a number of times over the last year including a tour with Passion Pit & Hockey the Brooklyn band are already making waves on these shores with their post-punk charged set. Bear Hands formed in 2006 and consists of Dylan Rau, Ted Feldman, Val Loper and TJ Orscher.

Airship
Expect to know the names Elliott Williams, Marcus Wheeldon, Steven Griffiths & Tom Dyball very soon. Airship have already toured the UK with Marmaduke Duke and Nine Black Alps this year and this autumn tour with Editors. The band have been described as Manchester’s answer to Mew and we wouldn’t argue with that. A brilliant live band and another not to miss.

Holy State
Leeds based 4 piece punk outfit reminiscent of Jesus Lizard & Hot Snakes. The band featured on DTTR’s 4x12” Volume 2 compilation along with Huw Stephens ‘The Music Sounds Better With Huw’ compilation. With some seriously good tunes and a ferocious set get pitched up early and come down to see them before they explode.

Leeds independent label Dance To The Radio has recently been busy with the critically acclaimed debut album by Grammatics (the band tour the UK with Bloc Party in October.) Amongst other projects the label has continued to release their compilation records. This time the label set up the 4 x 12” series of vinyl compilations which have featured Bear Hands, Pulled Apart By Horses, Das Racist, Suckers, Holy State, Bear Driver and Wonderswan.

Lostprophets headline the NME/R1 tent

Lostprophets return with two very special intimate festival appearances giving fans an exclusive preview of their long awaited fourth album.

The band will headline the NME/Radio 1 tent at the Reading & Leeds Festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday 29th August at Leeds and Sunday 30th at Reading.

The band last toured the UK in 2007 and have been working flat out in the UK and US on their highly anticipated follow up to the number one album ‘Liberation Transmission’. Vocalist Ian Watkins commented, “We’ve been dying to come back to the UK and play and when we realised the timing meant we could make it Reading & Leeds we jumped at the chance as it’s got the most amazing memories for us. We also thought, rather than playing on the main stage we could get in the tent and see the whites of the eyes of the fans down the front, and get their first hand reaction to the new songs. It’ll be amazing.”

We are immensely thrilled to welcome Lostprophets back to Reading and Leeds Festivals in a very special up-close setting. They have always been a huge hit with fans at both sites and have performed some legendary shows. Lostprophets and shows like this are what Reading and Leeds are all about.

ALL WEEKEND TICKETS SOLD OUT

A small amount of day tickets are, at time of writing, available for all days at The Leeds Festival, priced £70 per day. See www.leedsfestival.com for details of where to buy these tickets.

Melvin Benn, MD of Festival Republic, said of the dual sell out:

This is the 7th year in succession that both events have sold out within 24 hours of going on sale and I am very very pleased of course. The stature of the events have grown and grown each year and this year’s line up only adds to that. However, I must express caution towards all those who will now try to get their hands on tickets in whatever way they can as they do need to be careful of dodgy sites. The only site I can recommend will be viagogo who will at least guarantee anything they sell.”

The world famous Reading and Leeds Festival takes place from Friday 28th August to Sunday 30th August 2009.

Headliners this year are The Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and Kings Of Leon. For more details on the bill and further information on the event please visit www.readingfestival.com / www.leedsfestival.com.

LOOK AFTER YOUR WRISTBAND

A wristband must be worn by everyone on site, and if yours is damaged or lost you may not be able to enter the arena and/or may be required to leave the site.  So here are a few tips on looking after your wristband….

1.  Ensure your wristband is secure.  The clasp should be firmly in place and not slipping up or down.  The wristband must not be loose so check it cannot slip over your wrist.

2. Do not tamper with your wristband in Any way.  The wristband often has loose ends which many are tempted to cut or burn off.  Do not do this. If the ends are tampered with it increases the likelihood of losing your wristband as the ends may fray and/or can slip out of the clasp more easily. Most wristbands have a warning which says “void if removed” and the promoter has the right to refuse entry if a wristband has been tampered with.

3. Do not tie knots or add anything to your wristband.  All bands are checked each time you enter the arena and at various checkpoints around the site.  Knots, plasters, tape etc. on your band will have to be removed to check the band properly and this will cause delays to you and others at the entrance.  Some people may be sensitive to the metal on some clasps.  If this is the case do not put tape on the wristband, but protect your skin with hypoallergenic tape instead.

4. Keep your wristband safe.  Even if a wristband appears secure it may still get lost or stolen especially if you get involved in lively crowd activity, “moshing” etc.  The best way to keep your wristband safe, and to prevent the loose ends snagging or annoying you, is to wear an elasticated/towelling sweat band over the top or a long sleeved top with elasticated cuffs.  This way you will keep it safe but you will still be able to show it at checkpoints easily.

5. What if you have a problem?  As soon as you realise you have a problem, lost, damaged band etc. you must get help.  If you are outside the arena there will be “wristband exchanges” where someone will try to help/advise you.  If you are inside the arena do not leave, go to the arena entrance and, without leaving the arena, ask for the supervisor who will be able to help.
